Dwelling on the Positive

Dwelling on the positive things in life is hard. I tend to want to think about the bad, hard, and negative things that are going on and that have happened instead of focusing on the wonderful things God has provided.

For example, yesterday was my birthday. I love celebrate birthdays and I'm proud to tell people I am 43 years old. But something happened last night that I allowed to put a damper on my festivities. Instead of cooking my own birthday dinner, I asked my husband if we could go out instead. Where I wanted to go eat (Carraba's) was too far of a drive so I thought about all the options available near our house. I decided on On The Border, a place I haven' been to in a while but love. So, Mike and I loaded up the kids and headed off. When the kids were told where we were going, they started in with the whining and complaining. It didn't stop until we were on our way home. At the restaurant, they fought with each other. One didn't like the choices on the kid's menus and drink options. Another wanted to stand up and jump on the seat (we were sitting in a corner booth) or sit on the corner edge of the back of the seat. When the food came out, they weren't happy with the cheese on the nachos they ordered (it was melted instead of the nacho cheese). It went on and on. I know we bothered the people around us even though they didn't say anything.

What I should focus on (and need to remind myself to do regularly) is that I have a family that cares about me. My husband is awesome, loves me a lot and treats me like a queen. He still has a great job and we can afford to go out to eat. (I have two different friends that have just gone through job losses and don't know what to do.) My kids are healthy and love each other, even though they don't like each other some of the time. I have a house that I love to share with others any time of the year (as long as they don't mind the mess ;-)). Most important of all, I have a Savior who loves me, died for me and forgives me of all I've done wrong even though I will never be able to repay Him.

Life isn't going to go the way I expect or want it to. I just have to remember to focus on the blessings God has given me and trust Him to get me through the rough patches. He will ALWAYS be there for me.

A Funny Thing Happened At The Birthday Party

Demetria, Hannah's friend from school, celebrated her birthday party at Cici's Pizza today, along with her sister and brother who also celebrate birthdays this month.  Everyone was having a great time eating pizza and talking.  When the cakes were brought out, Shan, Demetria's mom, put candles on both cakes.  Little did she know, they were magic candles.  You know, the ones that light back up after being blown out.  She has some for Demetria and Miracle on one cake and more on RJ's cake.  As you well know, when the kids tried to blow them out, the candles wouldn't stay out.  The kids kept blowing and blowing to no avail.  Brian, Demetria's dad, was trying to put them out with condensation on his glass.  Some would go out but others would light up.  It was so funny!!  The room was getting smoky, the kids and adults were laughing and we tried everything we could think of to keep the candles out.  Finally, Brian took his cup and just sat it on top of the different candles, pushing them into the cake.  FINALLY they went out for good.  The manager had to open the door to let the smoke out.  When she walked by, she said the sprinklers had been ready to go off when she opened the door.  That bit of news set the parents to laughing again.  After it was all over, I remembered from parties past that you need to drop the candles in water for them to stay out.  Maybe next time we will remember.  It was a great, and very memorable, party for all!

Mike's Birthday

Today is Mike's birthday!!  He opened his presents this morning at breakfast.  The kids and I got him a pair of sandals, a red patriotic t-shirt, the newest Newsboys cd and Casting Crowns' "Altar and the Door" cd.  For dinner, I made his favorites: salmon with asparagus and carrots.  For dessert, I made him a strawberry pizza.  He really enjoyed everything, especially dessert.

For the salmon, I combined a couple of recipes.  I cut up a lime and lemon and squeezed the juice over the fish.  I seasoned it with salt and pepper and topped it with lime slices, lemon slices and onion slices.  Wrapping it in foil, I baked it for 25 minutes at 400 degrees.  Mike and the kids gobbled it up.

Hannah did the asparagus for me.  After she rinsed and snapped off the ends, I sprayed a pan covered in aluminum foil with cooking spray and laid out the asparagus.  Hannah sprinkled it with salt and pepper after I sprayed it with cooking spray.  We then broiled it for 10 minutes on 400 degrees.  The kids also ate it up.  It was rather good.

Visiting With The Links

No, not golf links, my friends Barry and Stacy Link and their kids.  They came here to visit with me and my family and take in all the sights.  Stacy is originally from this area but is now living in Virginia.  They arrived Monday afternoon and, after checking into their hotel, came to visit with us here at the house for about an hour.  It was so good getting to see her again.  It has been eleven years her last visit.  All of the kids played in the backyard while Stacy, Barry and I got to visit.

Tuesday was a lazy day for them, swimming in the hotel pool while I was at a funeral.  That evening, they came back to the house.  The kids played outside again while Stacy, Mike and I visited.  Barry wasn't feeling very well so he stayed back at the hotel and rested.

Wednesday, we braved the heat and humidity (it was really bad) and went to Graceland.  As long as I have lived here, I've only been to Graceland once and that was to visit Elvis Presley's gravesite.  It was neat looking at how he furnished the house.  It wasn't as big as I thought it would be.  My kitchen is bigger than Elvis' was.   I think my living room is about the same size.  Sometimes you can see his horses out on the grounds but they weren't out Wednesday (I don't blame them).  After the tour, we thought about seeing the other exhibits on display like his airplane the "Lisa Marie" and his cars but the kids were hot, tired and hungry.  Stacy found out that we can use our other tickets on other days.  The only thing we had to see on that day was the mansion.  I am planning to go back and take the kids one day.  I think they would really enjoy it.

We ate lunch at Steak N Shake.  The kids all enjoyed is, as did the adults.  Found out, our drinks were half-price (even the shakes) because we were there during Happy Hour, which is 2-4 p.m. (and a.m.).  COOL!!  Stacy's family had never eaten there before and they loved it.  My kids were all excited when I told them where we were going.  They love it too.  After we ate, we went back to our house.  Barry's birthday was Tuesday and, since he was sick, we ate cake and sang Happy Birthday.

That night, some friends of Stacy's from high school got together and had a Girls' Night Out at Maria's Cantina and invited me.  They all were really nice and very friendly.  The food was really good too.

Thursday, we went to the Pink Palace Museum.  We saw "The Cowboy Astronomer" at the Planetarium.  Everyone, even Andrew, loved it.  Andrew sat in my lap the whole time and was very still.  Found out, some time during the show, he fell asleep.  Sweet!  Afterwards, we looked around the museum and checked out the gift shop.  Andrew got a clown fish and a whale toy.  He sat the clown fish on the escalator hand rail and it started moving.   It was so funny watching this little toy travel up on the escalator hand rail.  Nathan went to the top and caught it as it fell off.

We ate lunch ate Krystals.  This was another place the Link family had never been so Stacy wanted to make sure they experienced it.  The kids all seemed to like it.  My kids were excited about going too.

This morning, the Links headed out.  They are going to Stacy's dad's house then to the Cincinnati area to see the Creation Museum before heading home.  It was so good getting to see them and spend time with them.  Hannah had a blast with Christy and made a new friend.  Will, Nathan and Andrew enjoyed playing with Philip and BJ.  Joseph and Daniel were very helpful with the younger kids and are fun young men to be around.

Working Together

UPDATE:  When listing Will's wonderful presents, I forgot some.  He was really blessed to get a digital camera kit, a Triple Boost Rocket, a six shot Nerf gun, a plane kite, a Super Soaker water gun and four smaller water guns. Wasn't he blessed by his friends?

Yesterday was Will's birthday party.  He received all kinds of neat toys:  an arrow that sticks on everything, Iron Man action figure, Hot Wheels cars, two different Hot Wheels tracks, money and a Sonic card.  Because we got in so late last night, I told Will he could play with his Hot Wheels tracks today.  So, this morning after we got one track set up, all three kids started fighting over it.  Andrew wanted the monster truck that came with one; Hannah wanted to be first; and Will wanted to be first plus try out all the features.  After listening to this for a few minutes, I told them to put the track up.  I wasn't going to listen to them argue over a toy all morning long.  Immediately, they started working and playing together (and made sure I knew it).  They were determined to play together and not have to put the toys up.  Hannah remembered Will got a second track so she is setting it up so they can play with it too.  Andrew got the box of Hot Wheels cars so they would have more vehicles to play with.

Isn't that how God wants us to be?  I'm sure He gets tired of listening to our bickering and arguing over silly things.  He wants us to work together, share our resources and get along.  And, when we do, we find out we are actually having fun and enjoy each others company.  What can we do to get along with our family members, co-workers, neighbors, etc?  All it takes is for someone to take the first step, share our toys and say a nice word.  Will that be you?  It's something I need to think about and do, too.

Pillow Pets and Doctors

When my mom asked Will what he wanted for his birthday, he was quick to say a Pillow Pet.  He had seen it advertised on television and just had to have one.  Mom went online, checked it out and ordered one.  It was suppose to take 3-4 weeks for delivery so Mom had a backup plan for his birthday party.  She was going to wrap a picture of it in a box then give him the real thing once it came in.  Fortunately, it was delivered today (Friday).  Mom found the box on her carport just before the kids and I stopped by.  While we were eating lunch, Mom was talking to Will about what he wanted for his birthday.  He immediately answered "A Pillow Pet!!"  She asked him a few more questions about it then gave him a box.  When he opened it, Will's eyes grew as big as saucers.  He was sooo excited!!!

Will took it with him to the doctor's office (he stepped on a bee Wednesday afternoon and had a histamine reaction to the sting).  He took it into Wal-Mart and was lying in it while in the back of the buggy.  He even took it to Baskin Robbins tonight (but left it in the car).  When we got home from Nana's, he ran over to our neighbor's house to show Mrs. Trisha and her granddaughter, Madison, his present.

Hannah and Andrew both want one.  Hannah has tried to bargain with Will to play with it by offering candy and what not.  One time, Will had it in the floor, lying on it while watching t.v.  He let Hannah lay on it for a few minutes with her blanket.  When Hannah got up to do something by the couch, Andrew jumped off the chair, picked up Hannah's blanket, threw it on the chair and plopped down on top of the pillow.  It was sooo funny to watch!  Tonight, as the kids were getting in bed, Will took his pillow off his bed and replaced it with Mr. Monkey (the name he gave his monkey pillow pet).  He is in love!!

We have been seeing a lot of our doctor's office lately.  Tuesday afternoon, Will and Nathan were playing baseball in the backyard.  Nathan was pitching and Will was hitting.  Nathan threw one of his fast balls and hit Will square in the forehead above his left eye.  It knocked the breath out of Will for a minute.  I was walking past the backdoor when I noticed Will holding his head and crying hard but silently.  After a minute or two, he and Nathan told me what happened.  Will had a nice big knot on his forehead, a huge headache and some discoloration.  I gave him some Motrin and an ice pack to help the swelling.  When I called the doctor's office (to see what I needed to look for and to see if he needed to go in), they said they wanted to see him the next day.  Thanks to God above, Will never experienced any nausea, vomiting, blurry vision or any other type of complications.  The nurse practitioner said Will was acting fine and, since he didn't have any other problems, he would not need a CAT scan.

That same Wednesday afternoon, Will and Nathan were playing baseball in the backyard again (this time using rubber and tennis balls instead of baseballs).  When it was Will's time to pitch, he stepped on something in the grass.  Thinking it was one of the many sticker weeds that populate our backyard, I told him it was nothing and to finish playing.  When he went to bed that night, Will said his foot hurt.  I didn't see anything but did feel a small bump.  Early the next morning (sometime after 5 a.m.), Will woke me up saying his foot was hurting and itching really bad.  I gave him some Benedryl and put some Calamine lotion on it and continued this regimen for the next couple of days.  Since Will was still complaining about it, I took him to the doctor.  The bottom of his foot was had a nice sized red patch that started going up his foot.  Dr. Carpenter said it looked like a histamine reaction to a sting and prescribed a steroid and Zyrtec.  Hopefully it will get better soon.  I hate to see my little man (or any of my kids) suffer.  When we left the doctor (the second time that week), I told Will that I didn't want to see the doctor again for a long time.  He just laughed.

Birthdays and Getting to the End of Ball Season

First and foremost, I want to wish Will a very Happy Birthday!!  His birthday was yesterday and he turned seven years old.  He opened his birthday presents at breakfast.  Will got a rubber-band airplane, Rocky Mountain Ranch Lincoln Logs, and a remote control truck.  He was soo excited!!  Do to both kids having games at 6 p.m., we were not able to do anything special with just the family.  I did make his favorite dinner (poppy seed chicken casserole) and take a special snack for his team so they could celebrate with him. Mommy and Daddy love you very much and are very proud of the wonderful young man you are becoming.

As stated earlier, both Will and Hannah had games last night.  Because I was running between two ballfields, I didn't get to watch much of either game.  Hannah's team won 15-4.  Her teammate, Emily, got a grand slam and five girls (including Hannah) hit home runs.  At her second time at bat, Hannah got a triple.  The girls were pysched, as you can imagine!  They worked together and did their best.  Way to go CRASH!!

Will's team was up 6-4 when the game was delayed due to lightning.  Thirty minutes later, the umps restarted the game.  Unfortunately, Will's team lost 14-12.  They did much better fielding and hitting but were not able to get the win.  This was their last game.  I am still very proud of these boys.  They have worked hard and were able to get two or three wins this season.  Will hit two home runs this year.  Good Job REBELS!!!

Andrew's last game was last Tuesday, June 1st.  Being T-ball, the teams don't keep score or keep track of how many outs.  These boys were so much fun to watch.  The ones who started out chasing the ball after they hit it ended up running the bases like big boys.  We still had a few (like Andrew) who preferred playing in the dirt when they were in the field but, in all, they all did wonderfully.  Even though Andrew is through playing baseball this year, he keeps asking when he is going to practice and when he is going to play his game.  Mike and I will just have to continue to work with him.  His coach, Paula, said she was thinking about calling the parents when she took her son to the park to practice so the boys could practice if they wanted.  I think that is a great idea.  She also wants to keep the team together, if she can, over the next few years. I am very proud of how Andrew and his team did.  Way to go MARLINS!!

Andrew's Third Birthday!

Andrew turns three years old today.  Where does the time go?  It seems like just yesterday I was in the hospital having him.  Now, he is in preschool, doing more and more things on his own and growing very quickly in his speech and size.

Party at Build-A-Bear Caps Off A Busy Day (plus a few thoughts thrown in)

We are home after a long, exhausting, and busy day.  On the way to church this morning (we were running late as usual), we saw a familiar van in front of us.  It was the Berryman ladies on their way to their church.  Even though they live about 1.5 miles from us, they also attend church in Collierville (their church is not too far from ours!).  Bettie (Mama Berryman) is the Nursery Director at their church.  Her girls, Breanne, Brandyce, and Brittney, were with her.  Carey (Papa Berryman) was at the fire station, I'm guessing, because he was not with his girls.  Brittney is one of Hannah's best friends.  They have known each other since their first day of 4 year old preschool and became the best of buds. 

After hearing a very interesting discussion on the latter part of chapter 6 and the first part of chapter 7 in the book of Revelation in Sunday school, Mike and I went to the second service.  Ernie did a great job preaching and teaching us about having passion in our lives.  Not physical or emotional, but discovering what you are passionate about and serving God and others in that area.  It was really good.  One of my passions is studying God's word, looking at the original Greek and Hebrew meanings and words to get a better understanding of what God says to us through His servants, the writers of the Old and New Testament.  I am not a scholar by any stretch of the imagination but I find it exciting to see what is actually conveyed through the original languages.

The family went to Carrabba's for lunch.  As usual, everything was delicious.  Our waiter, Jared, was great.  When Hannah told him her birthday was Friday and that Andrew's was this coming Saturday, he brought both of them a free birthday sundae with a candle on top.  Jared even brought an extra bowl for Will to share their dessert.  In the bag of extra bread he packed for us, he included a small packet of olive oil and the seasonings they mix with the olive oil.  In all the times we have eaten there, I've never had the oil and seasoning included in my take-home bag.  I was very pleasantly surprised.  I LOVE their bread and oil to dip it in!!  Now, I get to have some at home.

The party was a great success.  Hannah had a good turnout: Brittney, Gracie, Layne, Jonas, Samantha, Will G., Kara, Seth, Will J. and Andrew.  Instead of making an animal, we had a Make-Over Party where each child picked out an outfit and/or some accessories for their animals.  The only one who didn't already have a bear or other animal was Jonas, so his mom Donna bought him one to have.  Afterwards, we went to The Great American Cookie and had cookies.  Hannah had loads of fun and so did the others. 

Mike and I are exhausted after trying to keep up with everyone.  But, all in all, it was a good day.

Today is Hannah's 9th birthday!!  It's hard to believe she is already nine!!  Happy Birthday to my sweetie!!  Daddy and I love you so much!!

Richest Woman in the World

As I write this, the clock has turned past 12 a.m. so my 42nd birthday is officially over.  It has been a wonderful day filled with love and friendship.  My day started early when Andrew and Will woke us up at 6:45 a.m. (That's early for us.  I usually don't go to bed until around 12:30 a.m. and get up at 7 to get the kids ready for school.)  As I'm changing Andrew's clothes and diaper (his diaper leaked and he was soaked), the phone rang.  It was Nathan and Melanie calling at 6:50 a.m. to wish me a Happy Birthday before they went to school and work, respectively.  Hannah fixed me breakfast and had it waiting when I went into the kitchen. 

My birthday presents were sitting on the table.  Mike and the kids bought me a nice multi-pink robe, some pink house slippers, a gift card to Gould's Day Spa, and some roses.   I felt like a queen.  Hannah, Will and Andrew each made me a beautiful card and Mike bought me one with the sweetest saying.

The kids got ready for school all on their own, without me having to be on them constantly.  They dressed themselves (including socks and shoes), brushed their teeth and hair, made their beds, turned off their lights and opened their blinds.  They even had time to watch a little t.v. before heading off to school.

I spent the morning running errands and doing a little Christmas shopping, enjoying my last day by myself for two and a half weeks.  For lunch, I treated myself to McAlister's and used the $5 coupon I received as a birthday present from them.  It was sooo good! 

Mom came over after work and watched the kids so Mike and I could go to dinner.  We went to Kyoto's in Olive Branch and enjoyed watching they Hibachi cook.  The meal was delicious and the company was even better.  At 8:00 p.m., I met some girlfriends at Starbucks.  We enjoyed having some adult girl time without kids.  It was awesome!!!  We didn't leave until 10:30!!

Every time I checked Facebook, I had a ton of notifications letting me know someone made a comment on my profile page.  Friends and family members left birthday wishes and greetings all day long.  It was so nice to know so many people were thinking about me today.

I am truly blessed!!  I have wonderful kids, an awesome husband, great parents and fantastic friends.  I am the richest woman in the world and couldn't have asked for a better birthday present.

Happy Birthday Dick / Liberty Day

Today is my father-in-law's birthday!! Happy Birthday Dick!!! Hope you enjoy many, many more!!!

Today is also the day we remember the events that happened in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. Our prayers go out for the families of the victims and to the rest of the nation.

9/11 brings back so many memories and emotions. I was in my car at school headed to the library to study and wait for my next class when I heard the news. At first I thought it was a joke, like the "War of the Worlds" broadcast in the 40s/50s. You know, the one Orson Wells did that cause such calamity. Then, when reality hit, all I could think about was getting to Hannah (she was almost 8 months old and was at the babysitters) and calling Mike and my mom. My heart goes out to all our military, police officers, firefighters, and their families.

Busy Weekend Leads Into A Busy Week

Ever have one of those weeks where you feel yourself meeting coming and going? It looks like it is going to be one of those weeks after a busy weekend.

In case some of you weren't aware, Mike, the kids and I went to Chattanooga for a quick, almost last minute trip. Mike's dad was celebrating his 70th birthday with a party for friends and family. Dick's birthday isn't until the 11th but he wanted to take advantage of the long weekend. When he first called about the party, we didn't think we could make it. The kids were suppose to have their first soccer games on Sept. 5. Since Mike is coaching Hannah's team and helping Will's coach, we couldn't miss. Monday, I called the lady directing the Upwards teams to check the schedule. Because of the holiday weekend, she decided to move the first games to the next weekend. This now freed us up to go to Dick's party. We had to find a house/dog sitter since our usual sitter was also going out of town. Thank goodness, a dear friend, Sandra, volunteered to help us out. With that taken care of, Mike and I packed for our trip.

On the road, I remembered I left my ring soaking in ring cleaner. When we stopped to get gas and take a bathroom break, we found out the diaper bag was missing. Mike left it on Will's bed when he changed Andrew's diaper before we left. When we arrived in Chattanooga (about 1:30 a.m. ET), we found out Hannah's suitcase was left on her bed back at the house. Andrew was awake for most of the trip out. He finally went to sleep around 2:30 a.m. (I'm guessing on the time because it was after I went to bed). Saturday, the fam went looking for Walmart since we had to get Hannah all new outfits, pajamas, toothbrush and toothpaste. We went WAY out of the way but finally found it. (Oh, our Tom-Tom decided it didn't want to work at all while we were gone.)

The party was great. It was held at Vandergriff Park in Hixson where there was a great playground area for the kids right next to the pavilion. The kids played on the equipment and in the sand next to the tables. Mike got to spend time talking to Brent and Rich. Mich, Jennifer, Toni and I got to spend some time talking too. This weekend was the first time Mich and I had gotten to meet Toni. She is married to Mike's half-brother, Richard (yes, Mike has two brothers named Richard). Her Richard wasn't able to make it this weekend but Toni came. Afterwards, we went to Brent and Jennifer's (Daphne's son and daughter-in-law) to cook hot dogs and s'mores. We were all exhausted and went to sleep pretty quickly once we got back to the house.

Sunday was quiet. It started raining sometime during the night and continued off and on during the day. The kids enjoyed watching the Scooby Doo marathon on Boomerang while I enjoyed a nap on the couch.

We slept late every morning (at least 9-10 a.m.). This morning, we got up, packed and got on the road about 11. When we were almost half way home, I remembered we left Andrew's sippy cup and the container of milk we brought with us in Dick's refrigerator. A perfect ending to a busy weekend!!

Tomorrow starts a busy week. I have a board meeting at church; Hannah has soccer practice; there is a PTO meeting for Will's school; and Will's school starts selling cookie dough as a fund raiser. Thursday will be an equally busy day. Fun, oh fun!!!

Happy Birthday To My Husband

Today is Mike's birthday!!! Happy birthday Sweetie!!! We are going to Carrabba's for dinner tonight to celebrate (my idea). His idea was to not make any decisions about dinner. So, since he left it up to me, and since it is a very special occasion, I decided we would go out.

Will's Birthday Party

Yesterday morning (around 6:45 a.m.), when I went to get Andrew out of bed, Will sprang up and said, "Mom, it's my birthday!!!" He ran into Hannah's room and told her the same thing, even though she was sound asleep. While Mike and I were getting dressed in the back, Will opened some of his presents in the Living room and started playing with one. We got him a Play dough activity set called "Coco-nutty Monkey," a set of Cars sheets, and some play dough. We took the package of play dough with us to his party because it was the one he did not open.

At Bounz, the kids played on the giant inflatables for about 1 1/2 hours. They have a big slide called "The Titanic." Andrew climbed up it as soon as he walked in the door and had a blast. There was also one that had an obstacle course with two sides. Matthew and Nathan raced each other with Nathan the winner. Once Andrew got a little help with it (some parts were a little big for him at first), he wouldn't get off. There were a couple of other inflatables (one where the kids could act like gladiators and the other one was just to bounce in) where the kids all played. We had cake and ice cream after Will opened his presents. Melanie and Nathan bought Will a Play dough "Ice Cream Shoppe" Activity set. He also received gift cards to Target and Dollar Tree, a Cars Tire Fishing game, Optimus Prime Transformer, and Sticker Play set, and some money. Will is in heaven. He loves all his toys and started playing with them as soon as he woke up.

Today is Will's 6th birthday!! He is really excited. For his birthday party this year, we are going to Bounz (it has three huge indoor inflatables) instead of doing the water party in the backyard. Since we've had his party here at the house every year since he was born, he decided to do this instead. Happy Birthday to my little man!! I can't believe you are growing up so fast.
