SUMMARY: She has always moved between worlds, but now she must choose a side.

The daughter of a Mohawk mother and a French father in 1759 Montreal, Catherine Duval would rather remain neutral in a world tearing itself apart. Content to trade to both the French and the British, Catherine is pulled into the Seven Years' War against her wishes when her British ex-fiance', Samuel Crane, is taken prisoner by her father. Samuel claims he has information that could help end the war, and he asks Catherine to help him escape.

Peace appeals to Catherine, even if helping the man who broke her heart does not. But New France is starving, and she and her loved ones may not survive another winter of conflict-induced famine. When the dangers of war arrive on her doorstep, Catherine and Samuel flee by river toward the epicenter of the battle between England and France. She and Samuel may impact history, but she fears the ultimate cost will be higher than she can bear.

REVIEW: Like her other books before this, Jocelyn Green does not write your "typical" novel. It does have many details other books have but the situations her heroines find themselves in and how they overcome difficulties are not the same. That's what makes her books something I look forward to reading.

Catherine is a strong woman who has had to deal with prejudice and abuse most of her life. She chooses to live as a Frenchwoman but she looks like a native. I like how she doesn't let the narrow mindedness of others make her bitter or angry but chooses to rise above her circumstances to make things better for herself and those around her. She is determined to keep her Mohawk roots and connections alive as much as she can. She helps everyone around her and looks out for those who sometimes can't take care of themselves.

There are many decisions Catherine has to make, especially some that are not so easy ones. She also purposely decides to abide by decisions made by others that affect her, some which as very hard but are very admirable.

Without giving away anything in the story, let me say this was a very interesting read. It's different from others of the same style but remarkable. This novel is one I thoroughly enjoyed and look forward to rereading again so I can delve deeper into this character and those around her. Check it out for yourself. I think you will enjoy it as much as I did.

SUMMARY: CLEAR, CONCISE, AND ACCURATE DEFINITIONS OF MORE THAN 500 BIBLICAL TERMS AND TOPICS.
When it comes to the realm of biblical studies, students of the Bible
are often overwhelmed, both with the sheer volume of information and
with all of the unfamiliar terms, concepts, and topics. Like any other
field of study, the serious study of the Bible has developed a
specialized vocabulary. The key terms in this important field are
defined in The Compact Dictionary of Biblical Studies. It
provides clear, concise, and accurate definitions to help students of
the Bible make sense of the specialized language of biblical studies.

REVIEW: If you want to learn more about the bible but are intimidated with all the resources out there and the sizes of the books available (some of them are HUGE!!!), this might be the book for you. The authors have defined common, and not so common words, used by Christian theologians, pastors and bible studies leaders. Scholars of the Old and New Testaments and other men and women who have shaped how we study and interpret scripture are noted along with their contributions to the study and understanding of the bible. Also included are words not found in the bible but are used to help understand the culture, times and customs of the Old and New Testaments. It's nice to have something I can throw in a bag with my bible and notebook that can help me in my pursuit of a better understanding of God and His Word. If you want to expand your knowledge, this would be a great place to start.

SUMMARY: Will gaining the world cost him everything he holds most dear?
When stable hand Nolan Price learns from his dying mother that he is actually the son of the Earl of Stainsby, his plans for a future with kitchen maid Hannah Burnham are shattered. Once he is officially acknowledged as the earl's heir, Nolan will be forbidden to marry beneath his station.
Unwilling to give up the girl he loves, he devises a plan to elope - believing once their marriage is sanctioned by God that Lord Stainsby will be forced to accept their union. However, as Nolan struggles to learn the ways of the aristocracy, he finds himself caught between his dreams for tomorrow and his father's demanding expectations.
Forces work to keep the couple apart at every turn, and a solution to remain together seems farther and farther away. With Nolan's new life pulling him irrevocably away from Hannah, it seems only a miracle will bring them back together.

REVIEW: While reading this book, everything was worked out in my head how things should go, just like Nolan does after he finds out he is the Earl's son. But, as we both found out, things don't always go as you planned. I like how the author kept the obvious conclusions from occurring, keeping my interest the whole time. As different twists and turns came about, it kept me guessing how events would play out in the end. Nolan and Hannah both grow a lot, not only in their character and together but also their faith, depending on God to see things through. As relationships get rocky, God gives them the strength to power through their trials to the blessings He has on the other side. I was pleasantly surprised with Nolan's father Lord Edward and Hannah's aunt Iris and enjoyed them very much.
If you want a distraction from the everyday, this book is a great one to pick up and read.
Cities of Refuge Series

Book One

SUMMARY: Though Israel has found relative peace, Moriyah has yet to find her own. Attempting to avoid the scorn of her community, she's spent the last seven years hiding behind the veil she wears. Underneath her covering, her face is branded with the mark of the Canaanite gods, a shameful reminder of her past captivity in Jericho and an assurance that no man will ever want to marry her.

When her father finds a widower who needs a mother for his two sons, her hopes rise. But when their introduction goes horribly wrong, Moriyah is forced to flee for her life. Seeking safety at one of the newly established Levitical cities of refuge, she is wildly unprepared for the dangers she will face and the enemies - and unexpected allies - she will encounter on her way.

REVIEW: Connilyn Cossette has written another fabulous book, this time regarding the cities of refuge that were set up in Israel. As with the books in her first series, OUT FROM EGYPT, this one picks up a few years after Wings of the Wind ends. Moriyah, who had been rescued from captivity in Jericho and branded on her face, hides from the rest of the world behind her veil. Even though she loves God, she has a hard time loving herself. As she runs for her life, I love how she finds strength in accepting herself as she is, and with it, becomes a stronger person. The author does a great job showing how Moriyah begins to see those around her who love and support her no matter what marks she carries . . . they love her for her.

This story still resonates with me, even though I finished it weeks ago, as does all of her books. Now, like in the other books the author has written, she refers back to characters and events that has happened previously. So, to get a much better understanding of Moriyah's background and struggles, it is good to read Wings of the Wind. That being said, I would suggest just getting the three books of the OUT FROM EGYPT series and read them. I don't think you will be disappointed. Connilyn Cossette has become one of my favorite authors, and I'm sure she will be one of yours too.

SUMMARY: Fleeing One Revolution to the Aftermath of Another, She Seeks and Dreams of Peace
Lacemaker Vivienne Rivard never imagined her craft could threaten her life. Yet in revolutionary France, it is a death sentence when the nobility, and those associated with them, are forced to the guillotine. Vivienne flees to Philadelphia, but danger lurks in the French Quarater, as revolutionary sympathizers begin to suspect a young boy left in her care might be the Dauphin. Can the French settlement Asylum offer permanent refuge?
Militiaman Liam Delaney proudly served in the American Revolution, but now that the new government has imposed an oppressive tax that impacts his family, he barely recognizes the democracy he fought for. He wants only to cultivate his hard-won farm near Asylum, but he soon finds himself drawn into the escalating tension of the Whiskey Rebellion. When he meets a beautiful young Frenchwoman recently arrived from Paris, they are drawn together in surprising ways to fight for the peace and safety for which they long.

REVIEW: Jocelyn Green's latest novel does not disappoint. As I read, I was caught up in the Vivienne's struggles. As she fights to stay alive, she desperately desires peace and safety. I like how she doesn't try to hide and mull over everything lost in France after she arrives in America but, after not being able to make it as a lacemaker, she finds a new trade making breads, pastries and pies for a local pub. Her tenacity to hang on when the going gets tough helps her and the young boy placed in her care survive when things look bleak.
Liam Delaney is a strong man who doesn't back down from a challenge. He stands firm on what he believes is right, even when it is not the popular thing to do. I like that he is a hard worker and, when faced with losing his farm, does what is necessary to help Vivienne when it's needed.
If you like reading historical novels, especially ones written around the time of the American Revolution, this is a novel you should check out. The author does a wonderful job with her storytelling and adventures. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Book Four

SUMMARY: Can one woman's prayers change the world?

Hannah and her husband, Elkanah, share a deep and abiding love for each other, for their God, and for His tabernacle at Shiloh. Greatly disturbed by the corruption of the priests, they long for restoration and pray for a deliverer. But nothing changes as the years pass. Years that also reveal Hannah to be barren.

Pressured by his family to take another wife, Elkanah marries Peninnah, who quickly begins to bear children. Disgraced and taunted by her husband's new wife, Hannah turns again to prayers that seem doomed to go unanswered. Do her devotions and kindness in the face of Peninnah's cruelty count for nothing? Will God remain silent and indifferent to her pleas?

Travel back to the dusty streets of Shiloh with an expert guide as Jill Eileen Smith brings to life a beloved story of hope, patience, and deliverance that shows that even the most broken of relationships can be restored.

REVIEW: Since Hannah has always been a favorite bible heroine of mine, I was excited to get Jill Eileen Smith's latest novel. As I turned the pages, I was taken back to the time after the judges when the priests were corrupt and hope seems lost and God distant. My heart cried with Hannah's struggles of infertility, disappointing her husband, and listening to the taunts of first her in-laws then her sister-wife. While she puts on a happy face for the world, I could feel Hannah's struggles and the pain of her barrenness. I like how the author expresses Hannah's turmoil, Peninnah's bitterness and Elkanah's struggle. She also does a wonderful job showing how the corruption of the priests affects the nation of Israel and the people. It was interesting to see how Hannah might have dealt with Samuel's birth and then giving him back to God with all the impropriety and turmoil at the tabernacle. The strength she had and the trust in Yahweh was awe-inspiring!! One of the most surprising, and enjoyable, parts was the end.

As usual, Jill Eileen Smith does an excellent job. If you like biblical fiction, you will love Hannah's story. Check it out for yourself and let me know what you think.

Seeking quiet and safety after a hard childhood, Leah marries Judah, a strong and gentle man, and for the first time in her life Leah believes she'll have peace. But the very nation Judah was named for has been conquered by a cruel king, who decrees that all Jews are to conform to Syrian laws or risk death for following the laws of Moses.

Judah's father resists the decree, igniting a war that will cost him his life. But before dying, he commands Judah to pick up his sword and continue the fight - or bear responsibility for the obliteration of Israel. Leah, who wants nothing but peace, struggles with her husband's decision - what kind of God would destroy the peace she has sought for so long?

The miraculous story of the courageous Maccabees is told through the eyes of Judah's wife, who learns that love requires courage . . . and sacrifice.

REVIEW: The author is upfront about this novel. While some of it is based on writings of the time (battles, certain characters, some events), quite a bit of it is the author's imagination. With that being said, Angela Hunt did an excellent job filling in what she imagines happened during the last part of what is referred to as The Silent Years - the 400 years between the last Old Testament prophet's writing and the start of the New Testament.

The Maccabees are known to biblical scholars as the family who fought for Jewish rights during a very difficult time. As Judah's wife, Leah would have a front row seat to everything that happened in this family. I struggled with Leah and her decisions and actions at times. She comes from a very abusive household so, when gentle Judah comes calling and offers marriage, she sees it as her chance for a life of peace. When Judah decides to take up the cause his father started, she tends to turn inward and doesn't share her thoughts and feelings with her husband. But, as the story moves on, I understood her a little better. The example of what she thought a wife should be and what she should endure was not what her sisters- and mother-in-law showed. As Leah learns to trust the Lord and Judah more, I like the changes I see in her character and actions.

This is a great book. I like how the author takes a little known part of history and develops characters and a complete story line that seems plausible. If you are interested in bible history, and can keep a little bit of an open mind, I think you will be pleased with this novel. Make sure you read the Epilogue and Author's Notes. It just adds to the story.

The Sugar Baron's Daughters

Book One

SUMMARY: In 1772 England, Lady Keturah Banning Tomlinson and her sisters find themselves the heiresses of their father's estates and know they have one option: Go to the West Indies to save what is left of their heritage.

Although it flies against all the conventions, they're determined to make their own way in the world. But, once they arrive in the Caribbean, conventions are the least of their concerns. On the infamous island of Nevis, the sisters discover the legacy of the legendary sugar barons has vastly declined - and that's just the start of what their eyes are opened to in this harsh and unfamiliar world.

Keturah never intends to put herself at the mercy of a man again, but every man on the island seems to be trying to win her hand and, with it, the ownership of her plantation. She could desperately use an ally, but even an unexpected reunion with a childhood friend leaves her questioning his motives.

To keep her family together and save the plantation that is her last chance at providing for them, can Keturah ever surrender her stubbornness and guarded heart to God and find the healing and love awaiting her?

REVIEW: The summary of this book caught my eye: a young English lady and her sisters attempting to manage a sugar plantation all by themselves without any outside help thousands of miles from their home in the late 1700's. The author does a wonderful job describing life on the island, the impressions of the women and the island itself. The characters' reactions to the slave market, the ocean front near their home and working hard beside their staff make me feel like I was there experiencing everything first hand. I like how Keturah fights for her sisters and tells them they do not have to marry for the sake of money, land or anything else, but only marry for love. I also like how she stands up for her slaves, treating them like humans. Even though she detests the slave markets, Keturah sees it is a necessary evil on Nevis but does what she can to make them feel like part of a family instead of cattle.
This book does not wrap everything about the Banning daughters lives or about trouble they have faced on the plantation. The rest of the series should take care of this. I can see how the next two stories will continue their progress as sugar baronesses and their lives on the island.
This is a great book. I am very interested in reading the other books in this series when they come out. I'm sure they will be just as good if not better.

SUMMARY: Platitude is a sleepy little town nestled in the mountains right in the middle of nowhere. Lightning bugs tease the children on long summer nights, the sweet scent of lavender fills the spring air, and demons swarm the town, blocking out the sun. Their goal is to ensure an entire generation is lost to the lies of darkness.

Aegeus, a warrior of the King, has been assigned to lead a team of angels to Platitude. But this mission is unlike any mission they have ever undertaken. Each of the twelve humans carries burdens deep within their souls, and one of them is rumored to be a prophet.

To help the twelve, discover who they really are, Aegeus must embark on his own journey of self-discovery. Soon, it becomes clear that the humans are not the only ones being hunted and destroyed. The fate of Aegeus himself may lie in the hands of the very human he was sent to protect.

REVIEW: If you like Frank Peretti's novels Piercing the Darkness and This Present Darkness, you will enjoy reading The Prophet. It is the first book by new author Dr. Ande Edwards. The story is divided between the spiritual realm and the physical one. Angels have been put in charge of twelve humans who are charged to help Christians fight against the dark forces of evil. Only thing is: the humans don't know this is their job. As they deal with difficulties on the college campus where they work and study, the twelve find strength in each other, their faith and, most importantly, prayer. There were times when the story switched from the human realm to the angelic and back that made it a little harder to adjust. But the longer I read, the more accustom I became to the switch. Also, the humans are only referred to by a number (One, Three, Twelve, etc.) instead of their names. It would have been nice to have a List of Characters to help me remember which person held which job and how they were connected to each other. There were a few times it would have been helpful when important events occurred to help keep the characters straight in my mind.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Ande Edwards did an excellent job. I look forward to the second novel and the rest of the books in this series. Hope it's not a long wait.

Dr. Ande Edwards is a bit of a mess. She is an artist living in a cupcake-loving scientist's body. Ande has always loved writing and photography. But somehow, through the crazy sort of path only God can steer you down, she ended up studying the sciences. The idea of writing a book was far from view. She discovered Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker long after the rest of the world, but they inspired her to consider the spiritual realm in a different way. She seeks to explore the spiritual battle that rages around us through the eyes of an artist and a woman of faith and science.

SUMMARY: Anna has one chance for survival - and it lies in the hands of her mortal enemy.

It's 1943 and Anna Zadok, a Jewish Christian living in Prague, has lost nearly everything. Most of her family has been deported, and the Nazi occupation ended her career as a concert violinist. Now Anna is left to care for her grandmother, and she'll do anything to keep her safe - a job that gets much harder when Nazi officer Horst Engel is quartered in the flat below them.

Though musical instruments have been declared illegal, Anna defiantly continues to play the violin. But Horst, dissatisfied with German ideology, enjoys her soothing music. When Anna and her grandmother face deportation, Horst risks everything to protect them.

Anna finds herself falling in love with the handsome officer and his brave heart. But what he reveals might stop the music forever . . .

REVIEW: Having heard great things about this author and her previous book, I was interested in reading her latest novel. Liz Tolsma makes you feel like you are there in Prague during the Nazi occupation. The fear of being discovered or even doing something that might accidentally draw attention, dreading every knock on the door and even reading the mail, constantly looking over your shoulder in fear is felt throughout this story. Her desire to protect her grandmother at all costs is admirable. Even though she is leery of trusting Horst, she soon sees his true colors.

Horst is a character I grew to admire. He also lived in fear that his true feelings would be uncovered - that the German ideology of a pure race being completely wrong. He enjoyed the job his father, a high ranking German officer, secured for him (logging and preserving the architecture of the old city) but knew one day he would be forced to kill innocent people to prove himself as a man and a worthy German. The struggles Horst faces is heart-wrenching, especially when you find out his secret.

This novel is a tale of the healing power of music, the struggles faced by man, and the deep desire God puts in each one of us to pursue Him at all cost. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

SUMMARY: With their past tearing them apart, it will take a storm to bring them together . . .

Billionaire Ian Shaw can have everything he wants - except a happy ending. Or at least that's what it feels like with his fortune recently liquidated, his niece missing, and the woman he loves refusing to speak to him. Despite her love for Ian, Sierra Rose knows he has no room in his life for her as long as the mystery of his missing niece goes unsolved. Sierra has solved it, but a promise to the girl to keep her whereabouts secret has made it impossible to be around Ian.

When Sierra needs funds to repair the damaged PEAK chopper, Ian offers a fundraising junket for large donors on his yacht in the Caribbean. But the leisurely excursion turns into a nightmare when a rogue wave cripples the yacht and Ian and Sierra find themselves washed up on a strange, empty shore.

It will take guts for the PEAK team to rescue the duo. But it will take a miracle to rescue Ian and Sierra's relationship.

REVIEW: Susan May Warren's books are some of my favorite. I love how she intertwines the characters, answers some tough questions and gets her characters in and out of very difficult situations. This book is no different. I like how Ian tries to look out for and protect Sierra even when it is difficult for him. After a devastating fire destroys a town due to a fault in the software program Ian designed, he liquidates all his assets to help the town rebuild and to pay off the federal fines acquired. With very little left to his name, Ian STILL tries to help Sierra raise money to replace a damaged PEAK helicopter. All in the name of love. Sierra is an encourager and doer. She loves helping people in need, so when Ian offers to help raise money to replace the chopper, she jumps in and gets the job done.

One of the things that bothered me about this book is all the different story lines happening at the same time. Four other stories are occurring and being discussed during Ian and Sierra's story. While this idea is more like real life (other people's lives do not stop just because we are focused on one particular couple), it does make for a confusing read at times. All of this author's books are like this and it's never really bothered me before, but for some reason, this time it was distracting. I found it hard to keep track of every couple and the events surrounding them. A list of characters and brief descriptions of each in the book would have been VERY helpful, especially since all of the story lines cross throughout the other books in this series, and future ones to come. This said, I see the potential for a minor character in this book to get her own story sometime soon.

All that being said, even though I found some things a little distracting, I liked this book and what I've read of this series. Hope you pick it up and check it out. DISCLAIMER: I read the first book and this one but missed books 2 and 3. There were a few times I wished I had read the others and was glad I read the first one because it gave the background to Sierra and Ian's relationship and issues. If you only read this one, you might be a little confused. The book does a good job of quickly explaining things but it doesn't rehash events discussed in the previous ones.

REVIEW: Do you like stories that keep you guessing, keep you turning the page to see what happens next with twists and turns that leaves you breathless? If you do, this might just be a novel you need to read. Lynette Eason is a fabulous story teller who will wrap you up and keep you entwined until the end. There were a few times I had to stop and think about what was happening and what had happened before moving on to keep everything straight. The detail she gives made me feel like I was right there in the midst of the action. I like how early on the author gives you glimpses into situations and events that play out in the end. Probably the only complaint I have is she should have included a list of characters. Izzy has quite a few brothers and sisters, along with friends, acquaintances and other characters who were important to the story. Because of this, it was difficult for me at times to keep track of who was who.
Lynette Eason has become one of my favorite suspense writers that gives you a touch of romance with the story. Check out her latest novel. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
SUMMARY: It is the eve of a new age of freedom in the colonies. But can a proper English lady dare hope for her own independence?
Lady Elizabeth "Liberty" Lawson has nearly everything a lady of her position could want. Daughter of the British lieutenant governor of the Virginia Colony and a darling of fine society in a rugged land, she is anticipating an advantageous marriage. That her betrothed is a rake and love is lacking is of little consequence - or so she tells herself.
Though her own life seems in order, colonial Williamsburg is a powder keg on the verge of exploding, and her fiance's cousin Noble Rynallt carries the flame of revolution in his heart. Those with connections to the British nobility are suspected as spies, and Liberty soon finds herself left with a terrible choice. Will she stay true to her English roots? Or side with Noble and the radical revolutionaries?

REVIEW: Laura Frantz's latest novel transported me back to the beginning of our great nation and the difficulties that were faced by all citizens - both British and Colonial. Liberty has to make a difficult decision - go with her father and wait for this uprising to end or support the locals she has grown up with in their pursuit of freedom. I like how the author shows her reader Liberty's struggles and how she finds a way to support herself during this difficult time. In doing so, she discovers a way serve her new country and show support for her fellow Colonists.
I like how Nobel Rynallt is a gentleman and a Patriot at all times. He helps protect Liberty when events turn ugly. When standing for what he believes in comes at a great cost, Nobel doesn't hesitate. As I read this story, I had envisioned some things I thought might happen with different characters and during certain events. Ms. Frantz kept me on my toes and guessing as to how she would work things out. I like that the story was not predictable but was engaging and kept my interest throughout. This is a wonderful book that I highly recommend.
Hidden Justice series

Book Two

SUMMARY: The police say the woman was a murderer. Emilie Wesley knows they can't be talking about her client . . . can they?

To the world it seems obvious: Kaylene Adams killed her daughter and then was shot by police. Attorney Emilie Wesley knows a different story: Kaylene would never hurt anyone and was looking for a way out of a controlling, abusive relationship. Her death shakes Emilie's belief that she can make a difference for women in violent marriages. Self-doubt plagues her as she struggles to continue her work in the wake of the tragedy.

Reid Billings thought he knew his sister - right up until he learned how she died. He discovers a letter from Kaylene begging him to fight for custody of her daughters if anything should happen to her. No attorney in her right mind would support an uncle instead of the father in a custody case, but Kaylene's letter claims Emilie Wesley will help him.

Thrown together in the race to save Kaylene's surviving daughter, Emilie and Reid pursue the constantly evasive truth. If they can hang on to hope together, can they save a young girl - and find a future for themselves in the process?

REVIEW: Cara Putman's latest legal drama is wonderful. I really felt a part of the story. As I read, I kept trying to figure out ways Emilie and Reid could prove Kaylene's innocence and save her young daughter. Just as the main characters would get frustrated by the lack of evidence, I did too. I like how Emilie tried to keep evidence finding above board so it wouldn't get kicked out of court and how she was determined to look under every rock and in every nook and cranny to help her former client. Her diligence paid off.

The secondary story of Emilie's stalker was interesting. Having only read the last book, I was a little confused at times because some incidences that occurred in the other one that were referred to. But the author did a good job going back over some details to help the reader. Because of her past dating relationships, Emilie was empathetic to her clients trying to leave difficult and abusive relationships. She could offer something other attorneys couldn't.

Cara Putman does another amazing job. If you like legal dramas, this might be a series for you to check out.

Atlanta Justice

Book One

SUMMARY: Standing for what's right could cost her everything.

Tapped as Lead Counsel in a corporate cover-up lawsuit against Mason Pharmaceutical, Kate Sullivan knows this case cold make her career. What really drives her, though, is getting justice for the victims whose lives were ruined by the company's dangerous new drug. But when a whistle blower turns up dead, it paints a target on the back of everyone involved.

Former Army Ranger turned private investigator Landon James steps in to handle security for Kate. He's still haunted by mistakes in his past and is determined never to let something like that happen again. But it soon appears someone is willing to do anything - even commit murder - to keep the case from going to trial.

As danger closes in, Landon can't help but admire Kate's courage and resolve - but will her determination not to back down become too great of a risk?

REVIEW: This book captured my attention and kept it until the end. There were many twists and turns that I had to read slowly, and sometimes go back a few pages, to make sure I didn't miss anything. The details that the author included made me feel like I was part of the action.

I love how Kate kept her faith in Jesus at the forefront of everything she did. She wanted justice for those affected and family members whose lives had been changed by this drug but she wanted to do it the correct way. Instead of going rogue and trying to get information through questionable means, she stuck to her guns, did everything by the book, and in the end, it paid off. Her integrity is one to be admired.

Even though Landon didn't agree with Kate on faith matters, I like how he honored Kate's boundaries and listened to her when she spoke of how God brought her through difficult times.

If you like to read page turners and good legal suspense, check this book out. It was very enjoyable and I look forward to reading the other books in this series as they are released.

SUMMARY: The train taking nineteen-year-old teacher Christy Huddleston from her home in Asheville, North Carolina, might as well be transporting her to another world. The Smokey Mountain community of Cutter Gap feels suspended in time, trapped by poverty, superstitions, and century-old traditions.
But as Christy struggles to find acceptance in her new home, some see her - and her one-room school - as a threat to their way of life. Her faith is challenged and her heart is torn between two strong men with conflicting news about how to care for the families of the Cove.
Yearning to make a difference, will Christy's determination and devotion be enough?

REVIEW: This book was first published fifty years ago and has been loved by millions of readers since. Having watched and enjoyed the television series based on the book, I was excited to finally get a chance to read this beloved story for the very first time.
Catherine Marshall retells the stories told by her mother, the women the book is based on, with some added twists. She doesn't hold back any punches and shows life in its full, raw, and rough form. But, she also shows the love Christy developed for the people of Cutter Gap, how they opened her eyes to God and His love for us in ways she never could have living in Asheville. Sometimes it was not pretty; many times I thought about putting the book down because it was very difficult to read. But, I stuck with it and I am so glad I did. This book gave me a new outlook on life and a new appreciation for the area of Tennessee I have grown to love. If you have never read the book, or if you read it as a young person, pick it up and read it. It is well worth the time.
SUMMARY: Children's clothing designer Mary Wade Kimball's soft spot for animals leads to a hostage situation when she spots a briar-entangled kitten in from of an abandoned house. Beaten, bound and gagged by the two thugs inside, Mary Wade loses hope for escape when a third villain returns with supplies.
Discovering the kidnapped woman ratchets the complications for undercover agent Brett Davis. Weighing the difference of ruining his three months' investigation against the woman's safety. Brett forsakes his mission and helps her escape, the bent-on-revenge brutes following behind.
When Mary Wade's safety is threatened once more, Brett rescues her again. This time, her personal safety isn't the only thing in jeopardy. Her heart is endangered as well.

REVIEW: Something I really liked about this book was how the author did not give everything away in regards to the suspense in the book. Reading through the story, when I thought I had everything somewhat figured out, a new twist was added. The characters are likeable and relateable, except for the kidnappers. One of my favorites was Brett's grandma. She is someone I want to be like when I am much older. The ending was great. I like how everything Mary Wade was worried about works out because she stood up for what she believed, even though it was not what her parents wanted. This was a good book that keeps you turning pages. Check it out.
SUMMARY: At twenty-seven, Hadley is still trying to get free of the weight she's carried all her life - entering foster care at age five, getting arrested at seventeen for arson, and losing her boyfriend, Monroe, when she needed him most.
Monroe never wanted to walk out on Hadley. He'd understood her, from her desire to help children with speech issues to her intense temper. But when she was arrested, he became haunted by what he knew and convinced his only choice was to end their relationship.
Almost ten years later, Hadley and Monroe are both specialist in the field of speech therapy. They meet again...thrown together to help a four-year-old girl who's been rendered mute after being rescued from an apartment fire.
Years of secrets and anger beg to be set free as Hadley and Monroe try to push aside past hurts and find common ground in order to help the traumatized young girl and her family.
Can the love of Christmas past drift into the present, bringing healing and hope for all?

REVIEW: Some people never get a break in life. It seems like everything is against them and everyone judges them for things they didn't do, just by how they are perceived. Hadley is one of those people. Facing struggle after struggle, Hadley uses the experiences to make herself a stronger person who is more attuned to those hurting around her and those not given a fair chance. Her faith in God is what gets her through the most difficult circumstances. I like how Hadley is determined to give others the benefit of the doubt no matter how many others disagree. She also is determined to help Chloe overcome her speech difficulties and to give her her voice back, even if it means she has to work with Monroe to accomplish it. I also like how resourceful Hadley and Elliott, her best friend, are. They stretch the little bit they have (food, clothes, housing, etc) and are very creative. This and their amazing work ethics are something we all should aspire to do. These things help Hadley and Monroe navigate the troubled waters of their past and give them strategies for the future.
This book shows second chances are possible, if you just give them the opportunity. This is a fabulous story with a wonderful ending.
REVIEW: This book was amazing, as all of Lori Benton's books are. She delves into emotions, situations and events that make you think long and hard about the characters and how you might act if you were put in the same position.
This story is not an easy one. I can't even being to imagine how I would have reacted if I was in Clare's position: pregnant, and in labor, with only her small son to keep her company. Then, at the apex of her precarious situation, her son disappears into the wilderness. After Jeremiah and Clare locate Jacob, they cannot simply walk into the Shawnee camp and take him home. The time it takes and the way Jeremiah and Clare maneuver around the obstacles they face is mind boggling. It is a development of patience, love, endurance, and understanding. I love how the author weaves Clare's faith and the struggles she has with God into the story.
This is a wonderful novel that everyone should read.
Book One

SUMMARY: South Dakota: 1975

Eighteen-year-olds could order 3.2 beers in a bar and loaded guns were kept under the counter. Frankie Valli sang My Eyes Adored You and American soldiers returning from Vietnam struggled with their new reality.

It's within this tumultuous season of American history that Tillie Caselli meets Noah Hansen, and they are never the same again. Their lives were mysteriously intertwined - and had been for many years - yet they had no idea.

From
the moment they met, Tillie and Noah wanted to spend the rest of their
lives together, but a deliberate omission will keep them apart – and
that same omission will be responsible for the escape of a murderer, and
a bride’s deception.

REVIEW: I've been thinking about this book and review for a while now. It's one of those stories that stays with you a long time after reading. There were some things I really liked and some that were just different - not bad, just different.
I like the concept of the book and the characters. Sometimes it felt like I was right there in the room with the characters. Quite often I wanted to grab a few of them by the back of their neck and ask them what they thought they were doing, that they were being really stupid and presumptuous. Other times, I cheered them on when they showed their mettle. The story reminds me of the movie The Notebook in, after they were separated, how there were near misses and misunderstandings. I liked how Tillie's life and Noah's life run parallel to each others in
so many different ways and getting to see how each other lives without
the other perosn in their life.
The story line, and the possibilities of what could happen in
future books, is intriguing. I like how the author gives you a taste of
events to come. I also like how some people aren't always who you
think they are, good or bad.
One thing that was different was how the story and characters flowed. Okay, sometimes when I am reading, I wonder what the other characters are thinking during a particular scene. For example, if the family is all in the room when a boy comes to pick up the daughter for a date, I have wondered what everyone (Mom, Dad, brothers, sisters, boy, daughter) is thinking at the time. This author shows you what everyone's thoughts and conversations are during scenes. At first, I couldn't figure out why suddenly the parents are having a conversation with the brother when the scene had been focused on the daughter talking to her sister-in-law. But after reading a while, I began to see what the author was trying to do and it became a little easier.
Another thing that was different was how the author focused on other family members and their spouses, showing scenes of their lives that didn't seem related to the main characters' stories. Yeah, it's interesting to hear their conversations about events in their lives but the book is not about them.
This was an intriguing book. My interest has been piqued about the rest of the series.

SUMMARY: She's determined to give her baby a better life. Could a Christmas miracle make it possible?
Not long after she receives the news in 1944 that her baby's father was shot down in the South Pacific, Amelia Richards loses hope. Jobless and broke, she has nowhere to turn for help but her infant's paternal grandparents. The only problem is, they don't know that she - or their grandson - exists.
When Amelia discovers the family is wealthy and influential, dare she disclose the truth of her relationship with their son? Or could the celebration of the arrival of another unexpected baby nearly two thousand years ago be the answer to her dilemma?

REVIEW: Amelia has not had an easy life, and early on, she faced her challenges head on. When she receives news of her fiance's plane crash, I like how she faces her circumstances and does the best thing for her son. Even though she is scared and faced with a VERY difficult choice, she still puts her son and his needs above her own. I admire Amelia in that she is willing to do whatever it takes to give Jimmy the best in life, even if it means making major sacrifices.
At first, I wasn't sure I was going to like Helene, James' mom. She comes off as the stereotypical woman born into money with everything just right. But, as the story unfolds, you see she hides her true feelings behind a mask, afraid to let the world she how she really feels. I came to appreciate her love for her family, which eventually includes Amelia.
The ending of the book is the best by far. I loved how the author brought reconciliation not only between Amelia and James' parents but between Helene and her son-in-law and also with James' decision to become a pilot. This is a great book to read, especially between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is a fairly quick read and enjoyable. I really liked it and hope you do, too.
Amish Beginnings Series

Book Three

SUMMARY: In a wild country, the true cost of love may be more than they can bear.

Beautiful and winsome, Betsy Zook never questioned her family's rigid expectations, nor those of devoted Hans - but then she never had to. Not until the night she's taken captive in a surprise Indian raid. Facing brutality and hardship, Betsy finds herself torn between her pious upbringing and the feelings she's developing for a native man who encourages her to see God in all circumstances.

Greatly anguished by Betsy's captivity, Hans turns to Tessa Bauer for comfort. She responds eagerly, overlooking troubling signs of Han's hunger for revenge. But if Betsy is ever restored to the Amish, will things between Hans and Tessa have gone too far?

Inspired by true events, this deeply layered novel gives a glimpse into the tumultuous days of pre-revolutionary Pennsylvania through the eyes of two young, determined, and faith-filled women.

SUMMARY: Sometimes God works in ways we don't understand to take us to places spiritually, physically and emotionally we would never go on our own. Betsy soon finds out how God uses her time as an Indian captive to help bring her to an understanding of Himself and others around her that she wouldn't have otherwise had. It also makes her stronger than she ever thought she could be and helps her when she needs to make difficult decisions.

Tessa is like most of us; we want what we can't have. When we finally get a taste of it, we want more, even if it isn't God's best. Tessa makes decisions that come back to haunt her and influences others to make bad choices. I like how she owns up to her mistakes and does what she can to make restitution.

The ending was different in that one character's story was left open ended while others were tied up neatly. I liked how this novel closed with all kinds of possibilities that only God knows the ending. This book is set about twenty-five years after the first and second ones. Even though I read the first one but not the second, I was able
to follow along without any trouble, especially since there was a Cast
of Characters to help fill in any blanks. This is a good book and a good series.

Shadows Over England Series

Book One

SUMMARY: She's out to steal his name. Will he steal her heart instead?

Rosemary Gresham has no family beyond the band of former urchins who helped her survive as a girl in the mean streets of London. Grown now, they are no longer pickpockets - instead they focus on high value items and have learned how to blend into upper-class society. Rosemary is beginning to question whether she can continue in this life when she's offered the challenge of a lifetime - determine whether a certain wealthy gentleman is loyal to Britain or to Germany. After all how does one steal a family's history, their very name?

As Europe moves ever closer to World War I, rumors swirl around Peter Holstein. Awkward and solitary, but with access to the king, many fear his influence. But Peter can't help his German last name and wants to prove his loyalty to the Crown - so he can go back to anonymously writing a series of popular adventure novels. When Rosemary arrives on his doorstep pretending to be a well-credentialed historian, Peter believes she's the right person to help him dig through his family's past.

When danger and suspicion continue to mount, both realize they're in a race against time to discover the truth - about Peter's past and about the undeniable attraction kindling between them.

REVIEW: The summary of this book drew my attention. There were so many questions floating around - how does someone prove they are a loyal citizen? How does someone steal a name? Why did Peter keep his office locked up and why was no one
allowed entry without his permission, not even his loyal housekeeper?
What did he do with the typewriter on his desk all day? Where did Peter's father and grandfather put all the important paperwork about their immigration to England from Germany? How was the Holstein family connected to the British royal family so that the men were advisors to the present and past rulers of England? As I read, little by little these questions were answered, albeit, some quite slowly. I liked the mysterious air attached to this story with the secretive Mr. V and the details Rosemary slowly discovers about the Holstein family. Sometimes it was hard to keep the information together because each piece of the puzzle was very slowly revealed. As I read, I wondered what Rosemary would do with the information she was gathering for Mr. V and about how was behind the attacks on Peter's house. I like how the book ended because it was not what I expected and the way it sets up for another book in the series.
This book was different from others I read in that it was slower in revealing the details need to absolve the problems Peter was facing but, not everything is answered quickly in real life either. This is a good book and recommend it to someone wanting a little mystery.

Book Three

SUMMARY: Finally back in the Old Order Amish world she loves, will Ariana's new perspectives draw her family closer together - or completely rip them apart?

After months away in the Englisch world, Ariana Brenneman is overjoyed to be in the Old Order Amish home where she was raised. Yet her excitement is mixed wit an unexpected apprehension as she reconciles all she's learned from her biological parents with the uncompromising teachings of her Plain community. Although her childhood friend, ex-Amish Quill Schlabach, hopes to help her navigate her new role amongst her people, Ariana's Daed doesn't understand why his sweet daughter is suddenly questioning his authority. Will she sow seeds of unrest and rebellion in the entire family?

Meanwhile, Skyler Nash has finally found her place among the large Brenneman family, but Ariana's arrival threatens to unravel Skylar's new identity - and her sobriety. Both Ariana and Skylar must discover the true cords that bind a family and community together and grasp tight the One who holds their authentic identities closer to His heart.

Gathering the Threads is the third and final novel in The Amish of Summer Grove series.

REVIEW: Cindy Woodsmall does a phenomenal job bringing an end to Ariana and Skylar's stories and all the intricacies involved with these families. There were times when I wondered what choices Ariana would make and how it would play out. When I thought I might have it figured out, the author would throw something else in play to change my thinking. Skylar was a hard one to love all throughout the series. Her animosity towards the parents that raised her, her biological parents and Ariana was exhausting. But, I love how she grew as a woman, when she let God work in her heart and learned from those around her to become a better person. Ariana also had some difficult choices to make. The decisions she made were ones that causes her some pain but I love how they were perfect for her.
This is an amazing series. The books must be read in order as each one builds on the previous story. The details that the author goes into were difficult to follow at times because there were so many moving parts but all were very important to the end game and makes for a fantastic read. I highly recommend this series.
REVIEW: I'll be honest. There were many times while reading this book that I thought about putting it down and not reading any more. It was not the story line. I found it engaging and captivating. The problem I had was the actions of Ana. This is not your typical clean Christian fiction. While it doesn't go into details, Ana makes some bad decisions, which in turn leads to more bad decisions, and on and on. But, as I continued to read, I realized this novel is a story of Ana's faith journey. It is not neat, clean or quick. It is messy, complicated and takes a long time for her to realize her need for a personal savior, Jesus. God doesn't forget Ana while she is in the midst of her mess but sends people, events, and "coincidences" to let her know she is not far from His thoughts. Even when life is looking its bleakest, God reminds her that He is right there with her.
This is a book that should be read by anyone who wants to see how Jesus loves us even when we don't deserve it and those who just want to experience God's grace again.
