Hannah's MAP scores
Tonight during Open House at Hannah's school, her teacher Mrs. Stiles gave me Hannah's scores and ranking on her recent MAP test. In Language, she is testing at a Beginning 6th grade level. In Math and Reading, she is testing in both at a Mid 5th grade level. (She's currently in the 4th grade.) YEA HANNAH!! Way to go!!!

Awesome Kids!
I have to brag on Hannah and Will!! Hannah was selected to be in the National Elementary Honor Society at her school!!! Will was selected to be in Spotlight at his school!!!
Not long after school started, Hannah brought home a note saying that she was a candidate for the NEHS at her school because of her grades. We had to complete a form that listed all of her accomplishments over the last year. Some of the things they were looking for were if she did volunteer work around the house and for family members; if she participated in community projects; if she was a member of any teams, groups, or organizations; and if she had received any type of rewards. They only wanted information for Third, Fourth and Fifth grades. We included her helping around here with the chores and the boys and helping Mom out this summer by cleaning her house. For community projects, we listed the Operation Christmas Child box we made last year. As for the teams, we listed her softball, basketball, and soccer teams and noted how long she had played on each (this is her sixth year to play soccer). For awards, I noted how Hannah had the most AR points in her class and in the whole Second grade. Even though the award for AR wasn't in the parameters they asked for, I felt it was important. The counsel met and discussed all the candidates and Hannah was selected. She is to be inducted on 30 September. YEAH HANNAH!!
At the end of the school year last year, Will brought home a note that he was being tested for Spotlight and that he did exceptionally well. He was suppose to be tested again over the summer but, due to a large number of students that also did well, his testing didn't occur until well after school started. This afternoon I received a call from the Spotlight teacher saying Will had been selected and should start this Wednesday. From what I understand about this group, they are students that are smart who also benefit from additional instruction. I think it is like an Advanced Placement group. Anyway, it is exciting!! WAY TO GO WILL!!
Hannah asked me which was better: Spotlight or the Honor Society. (She tested for Spotlight but never made it in even though her grades have been really good.) I told her they both were high honors and were equally awesome!!
Needless to say, Mike and I both are very proud of our children!!

Lunch with Will
Today I surprised the second most handsome (handsomest???) man in the world - Will - for lunch. (Second only, that is, to Mike.) I met with Mrs. Huffman, Will's school Speech Pathologist, Mrs. Moore, the school principal, and Mrs. Moffitt, one of the first grade teachers, this morning about his progress and the plan they want him to follow during the school year next year. We had a great conversation about his progress this year, too. He did not regress much over any of the holidays (Christmas break, Spring break) and was able to pick up where he left off pretty quickly once he got back into the routine. Because of this, he doesn't need to do any speech therapy over the summer. YEAH!!! All three ladies raved about how sweet Will is and what a wonderful child he is. A mother just loves to hear that about her children from people other than family!!
When we finished our meeting, it was close to Will's lunch time so I thought I would surprise him. He was really excited to see me waiting in the lunch room. After he picked up his lunch tray, the two of us and three of his friends sat down and enjoyed our time together. His friends were Chris, Prissy and Jill. Prissy asked Will why he liked her so much (she had Chris ask him too). Will answered it was because she was so cute. All three kids were very well behaved and were just adorable. We talked about their favorite colors, what color car their parents drove, their birthdays, if they had any siblings and that they were going to the playground after lunch. I was sad when lunch ended. The time just flew by very quickly. It was so nice and very enjoyable.

Exciting News
In the busyness of the weekend, I forgot to mention something very important - Will can ride a bike WITHOUT training wheels!!! He is sooo excited!! Mike took off the training wheels on Friday and worked with him for a few minutes. Will has had a little trouble starting off but is getting better. He wants to turn the wheel when he starts then looses his balance. I am so proud of him.
Also, both Hannah and Will made all A's on their report cards. They are doing great in school. Keep up the good work.
My friend Julia is. This will be #3 for her and her husband David. The baby is due December 4. Both David and Julia's birthdays are in December as are their boys. Isn't that interesting and fun? Congratulations!!

Spring Break and Time Changes
The Time Change to spring forward an hour occurred Sunday morning at 2 a.m. and the kids started their Spring Break this week. Even though we lost an hour, we are all still getting up about the same time, even with them sleeping late. It sounds weird, doesn't it? They are getting up around 8, which is 7 before the change. Their normal wake time for school is 7 a.m. I know. I know. Stop it. Okay!
We've been busy this week. Monday was spent grocery shopping. It isn't the funnest thing to do while you are on vacation, but it was a necessary evil. We were completely out of fruit and veggies, bread, eggs, and milk. The kids were really good, though and helped out a lot. They played outside riding bikes and scooters, and playing basketball.
Tuesday, the kids and I went to the Memphis Zoo with our friends, Tracy Gallagher and kids. Our kids are all about the same ages, so they have a buddy to have fun and partner up with. We met up there at 9:30 and left at 1. We took our lunch and ate it while watching the Sea Lion Show. The kids had a great time running around, seeing all the animals and hanging out with friends. All of us were wiped out. Andrew finally fell asleep for his nap after 2 p.m. and slept until 6. He walked the whole time.
Tomorrow, our friends Jack and Marilyn are taking Hannah and their granddaughter, Emily, swimming at the Y. The girls go to the same school and are about a year or two apart in age. They've met a couple of times and enjoying playing together. The boys and I are probably going bowling, but I haven't completely decided. It's either the park or bowling.
Thursday will find us at Chuck E. Cheese's with Susan and her boys. We've been looking forward to getting together for a while. Susan home-schools her boys so it limits our time to do things together. It worked out that their Spring Break was the same as ours so we decided to take advantage of it and hang together.
Friday, we will probably go bowling again and maybe to the park. I know, we plan to do that twice but the kids love it. Since Hannah wouldn't be able to go with us on Wednesday, I thought we could go again.
Growing up, I didn't get to do a lot during Spring Break because my parents worked. I remember sitting at home and playing with Melanie and my friends instead of taking trips or going a lot of places. Since we don't know what the future holds, I want to do as much as I can and hope the kids enjoy and remember it. You're only young once, right? Or, at least until you have your mid-life crisis...HAHAHA

Report Cards and Speech Accomplishments
The kids got their second nine weeks report card this week. Both Hannah and Will made all A's!!! I am so proud of them. Way to go Hannah and Will!!!
Will has also made fantastic progress in his Speech Therapy class. At the end of the school year last year, I meet with Will's Speech Therapist to discuss his progress through Kindergarten and the plan for the next year (1st grade). Ms. Rockett said he would work on his L words, practicing the letter L at the beginning, in the middle and the end of a word and using it in a blend (like in the word blend). She thought it would take him all year to complete his objectives. We also discussed how long he would need therapy. Ms. Rockett thought that Will would be through either by the time he was in Third grade or by the end of that year.
This year, Will's Speech Therapist, Mrs. Huffman, worked with Will on his L words twice a week. At the beginning of January, she phoned me about Will's progress. He has done so well on his L words, she wanted to show this objective as being complete. She also wanted to start working on the letter R. Mrs. Huffman was very pleased with Will's speech progress. I am tickled pink!! I can tell a difference when I listen to Will talk. He has come a long way. There are still some things he will need help with, like his TH blends, but I am more than happy with his attempts so far!

SNOW!!
Today we had some snow!!! Granted, it was not the 1-4 inches the weather forecasters were predicting at the first of the week (in all actuality, it is probably about 1/4 inch) but it's snow. School was closed today due to the road conditions in some of the rural areas. Hannah, Nathan, Will and Andrew went out about 9 this morning and made a small snowman and had a snowball fight. They were getting snow from wherever they could find it: on top of the trampoline deck, trampoline cover, play set, slides, patio table and the deck to name a few. They had a blast. The sun is out now and quite a bit of the dusting we received is gone.
Listening to those who grew up in areas that receive a lot of snow, they are amazed that schools are cancelled and that we get excited over a little bit. But, coming from someone who grew up here, ANY amount of snow we get is treasured. Sure, it is silly that just about everything comes to a halt. But, since we don't get enough snow each year to practice driving on, can you blame us? The only opportunity we get to have snow is usually accompanied with ice, something NO ONE likes to contend with, much less drive on. So, those of you who get way more than your fair share of the white stuff, please let us enjoy the little bit we get. To some of us, it's like Christmas morning all over again. Especially me!!!
I took some pictures and hope to get them downloaded off my camera today. The last set of pictures I downloaded off my camera was just after Halloween. I have 335 pictures to take off or delete. About one hundred of them have already been put on the computer; I just never deleted them off my camera. After I get them fixed up, I plan to post them here on my blog. We'll see!!
As a side note, my friend Susan just started a blog called "That's Whack!" Go by and check it out!

So Many Things Running Through My Head
My head is awhirl with many different thoughts today:
1) Andrew's recent trip down the street by himself.
2) Will's recent actions at school.
3) The Beth Moore Conference tonight and tomorrow.
4) Everything I need to do around the house that is never-ending.
5) Obama's Nobel Peace Prize (WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!)
6) My next blog tour posting and the books I need to read for the next two.
7) End-times events
and on and on and on... I'll elaborate on a few of these.
Ever felt like, as a parent, you were failing miserably with your kids? That's the way I felt yesterday.
While my sister was inside talking to me after she came by to pick up her son, Andrew went out front with the other children. Melanie and I went out a few minutes later and asked where Andrew was. No one knew and he didn't answer or come when we called. Looking around while I was trying to keep from panicking, Nathan spot him down the road. Andrew had wandered about eight houses down and was in the middle of the road, still walking away from the house. Nathan went and got him and asked why he wandered off. Andrew wanted to pet a dog he thought was our next door neighbor's. The one he was after actually belongs down the street. Andrew got a firm talking to and a swat on the backside.
Will has been grounded for the last week because he cheated in school on a math test. Mrs. Scanlon said he was repentant and said he wouldn't do it again. Instead of giving him an F on his paper, she let him finish it away from the other children. Then, yesterday, he did something else that I will not elaborate on. Suffice it to say, he had to apologize to the Librarian and to Mrs. Scanlon this morning for his actions.
On the radio today while I was running errands, I heard that President Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?! They said it was for his efforts in bringing peace to the world and his efforts towards the Muslims. If apologizing for America and saying we were wrong in everything we have done in the past (i.e. saving the Europeans and the rest of the world's posteriors on MANY occasions), bowing down to foreign leaders, and showing Americans disrespect for our Christian heritage and beliefs constitutes getting a Nobel Peace Prize, the Board needs to rethink their criteria.

Improvise, Adapt and Overcome
Mike says it is the unofficial Marine Corp motto: improvise, adapt and overcome. That seems to be the motto I live by nowadays. With Andrew not wanting to sleep in his crib, I let him sleep in Will's bed for naps and at night. Will slept in the floor and didn't mind. I bought Andrew a Cars toddler bed yesterday. He slept in it last night and it seems to be working for his nap, so far. For some reason, Andrew hasn't wanted to sleep. He has been up early (yesterday at 6 a.m. and this morning, 5:45 a.m.) and doesn't want to take a nap until late. Maybe now he has his own "big boy bed" he'll start sleeping more.
Last night while doing laundry, our dryer stopped working. The drum isn't turning. Mike and I discovered it late last night, around midnight. He took it apart but couldn't find the belt. Mike did find a roller lying on the bottom of the dryer case. I'm thinking either the belt slipped or broke because the drum isn't turning. Our old dryer has one of the rollers brake and it made a loud racket when the drum turned. Mike's not sure but thinks it might be the belt, too. We both hope it will be something easy and inexpensive to fix.

Last night while doing laundry, our dryer stopped working. The drum isn't turning. Mike and I discovered it late last night, around midnight. He took it apart but couldn't find the belt. Mike did find a roller lying on the bottom of the dryer case. I'm thinking either the belt slipped or broke because the drum isn't turning. Our old dryer has one of the rollers brake and it made a loud racket when the drum turned. Mike's not sure but thinks it might be the belt, too. We both hope it will be something easy and inexpensive to fix.

Has It Really Been A Week?
Has it really been a week since I last posted on my blog?! Wow!! I know we've been busy. The kids had their first week of school and enjoyed it. (Yes, school has already started. When we were in school, we started around the middle of the month, not this early.) I've enjoyed just having Andrew during the day. I miss Hannah and Will but not when they start fighting when we get home. Andrew starts MDO the week after Labor Day then I will have two days a week to myself. YEAH!! I already have plans in my head!!!
We finally got our new computer case in and Mike was able to get it put back together. We also downloaded an update to our photo program but it looks entirely different. Now I have to teach myself how to use it. Fun (said with a sarcastic voice)!!!

Meet the Teachers, Hair Cuts and Paw Prints
Thursday night we got to meet Hannah and Will's teachers. Hannah's teacher is Mrs. Browning. She seems really nice. Hannah saw one girl, Alexa, that she knew in her class. Hopefully she will know more when she goes to class on Monday. Mrs. Browning is also pregnant. She is due in October but said she will be here during the first nine weeks and testing. The paperwork has been filed for her sub but she doesn't know who it will be yet. Mrs. Browning said she will only be out about eight weeks. That would put her back just before Christmas break.
Will has Mrs. Scanlon as his first grade teacher and Mrs. Padgitt as his Teacher's Assistant. Mrs. Scanlon was Hannah's first grade teacher. When Hannah went up to her, Mrs. Scanlon was really excited to see her again. I like Mrs. Scanlon and I hope Will does too. She is a little strict but I think she and Will should get along great.
This afternoon everyone got their hair cut. Mike got his usual high and tight fade. Will got the same cut for the second time. It looks cute on him. Andrew just got a trim because he wouldn't sit still there towards the end. Hannah got her hair cut off at her chin and stacked in the back. It looks great. I had mine cut off to my shoulders with small layers. I like it so far.
Mike and I got something special from our vet in the mail last Saturday. Dr. Hooker sent us a framed paw print of Gracy's and a sweet card. We put it on the shelf with the kids' handprints. It is nice having something to remember Gracy by.

It's Official!
It's official!! Mike and I now have a third grader and a first grader!! Wow, where has the time gone!! You will be proud of me. I didn't cry at all. It was VERY difficult not to break down but I was able to hold it together. For a minute, while looking through Will's kindergarten portfolio, I thought I was going to lose it and almost did. But, I caught myself before the tears started flowing because, once they started, they weren't going to stop.
Mrs. Kicker, Will's teacher, showed a video of pictures that were taken throughout the year and had a copy for each of the students in their portfolios. She and Mrs. Shelton were great this year and made Kindergarten such fun for Will. He loves his teachers.
Hannah's teacher, Mrs. Wolfe, recognized the kids for the hard work they did throughout this past year. Hannah was recognized for making the Principal's list (all A's every 9-weeks), Attendance (Hannah only had two tardies or early check-out), and Reading (she had 91.1 AR points-the most in the Second Grade; the next child in her class had 78.something and the third highest had 71.1, I think). Mrs. Wolfe also recognized the whole class for doing a great job this year and for being such great students.
Next year will be a little bit of a challenge. I will have to pick up kids from four different schools: Nathan at HL Intermediate, Hannah at Southaven Intermediate, Will at Greenbrook and Andrew (once he starts back) at MDO. I'm not sure how it will all work out but I know it will. I can't wait for Andrew to go to Greenbrook. I have loved all of the teachers we have been in contact with. They are awesome!!! Only three more years to go until Andrew starts Kindergarten!!
Mrs. Kicker, Will's teacher, showed a video of pictures that were taken throughout the year and had a copy for each of the students in their portfolios. She and Mrs. Shelton were great this year and made Kindergarten such fun for Will. He loves his teachers.

Hannah's AR Points
I have to be quick - Hannah has a game at 7:30 and needs to be there at 7.
Hannah has the most AR (Accelerated Reading) points in ALL OF THE SECOND GRADE!!! Isn't that awesome??!! She has a total of 91 points. GGGOOO HANNAH!! YEAH!!

Countdown to the End of School
This past Thursday was Andrew's last day of school. Man, the year has just flown by!! His teachers, Kim and Valerie, ordered Happy Meals for everyone and they had fun. Before I knew it, it was time to get Andrew from school. Andrew had a blast in class and has learned a lot. He can count to eleven and knows the alphabet song (but most times he stops in the middle of the alphabet and sings the end of the song). He has made lots of friends. Thank you Kim and Valerie for making my little one's time a special one. You guys (or gals) are the greatest!!!
Friday was Field Day at Hannah and Will's school. They spent most of the day outside, playing on the inflatables, participating in contests and generally, just having fun. Nathan's school had "Taylor McRae Derby Day" also on Friday, which was like their Field Day. It is held in memory of Taylor McRae, who was killed in a car accident a few years ago. Nathan said they had fun playing games. His favorites were the basketball and baseball games.
Next Thursday, May 22nd, is the last day of school. I am looking forward to sleeping late (or later than we usually do). This morning the kids were up at 7:30 (they are usually up for school by 7 a.m.). I told Mike that when we finally get the kids to where they are sleeping late, it will almost be time for school to start again.

Mother's Day, part one
Today I received some of my Mother's Day presents. The kids ordered me a couple boxes of chocolates from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. The few I have had are DELICIOUS!!! Can't wait to eat the rest!!
Will made me a gift at school and gave it to me today. It is a tile with his blue hand print on it and a green ribbon to hang it. He also wrote me a special story. It is below:
(This is what it says: My mom is the most wonderful mom in the world! She is as pretty as a horse. She weighs about 300 pounds and is about 200 feet tall. Mom's favorite food is blueberries. I have the most fun with my mother when we play together. I think mom looks funny when she looks at me. I know she is really angry when I don't pick up my toys. If I had a thousand dollars I would buy my mom a balloon. My mom likes me best when I play. I wouldn't trade my mom for crayons.)

A couple of scares
Boy, when it rains, it pours. We have had a couple of things happen here that have our family going "WHOA!" Nothing serious, but serious enough.
First, last week Mike asked Dr. Hooker, Gracy's doctor, if it would be okay for her to go swimming. Since we were told not to let her run for ANY reason, we thought we should check. Dr. Hooker said she thought that would be great exercise for her without putting any undo stress on her front paw. Sunday afternoon, Mike took the dogs down to the lake behind our house. He threw the buoy out into the lake for the first time and Gracy swam out to get it. When she got back to the bank, she could hardly walk. She had trouble getting out of the water and could hardly use her back legs. (As a side note, because she is favoring her front paw, she is having to compensate with her back legs, which are have been giving her trouble for a while.) Mike had to carry her some of the way back to the house. Ever since, she has really been favoring her back leg too. Mike checked her out really carefully and thinks Gracy strained or pulled a muscle. Now, the poor girl is limping on her front right paw and her back left leg. Other than that, she seems okay. She is eating good and is still interacting with the family okay. In fact, last night she was rolling around on the living room floor scratching her back and making funny noises. Mike and I are still watching her for signs of major discomfort and pain.
Second, about 2 p.m. today, as I was getting ready to leave to pick up Nathan I got a call from the kids' school. Will accidentally sat on a pencil and got the lead stuck in the palm of his hand. Mrs. Klink, a Guidance clerk, said she had tried to get the lead out with some tweezers but it was too deep. She put some peroxide and a band-aid on it to keep it from bothering Will. Mom called me as I was getting in the car and volunteered to pick up Nathan for me. When I picked up the kids, Alecia, Gracie's mom, told me to bring Gracie by her office. So, my three and I went to the Methodist Minor Medical Clinic to see if they could help. (I had already spoken to Will's doctor's office and they suggested taking him to the Emergency room.) Dr. Politi was able to get a couple of small pieces out but said the rest just turned to a consistency like chalk dust when he tried to retrieve it. He gave Will a topical ointment to deaden the area but Will still felt pain. So, Dr. Politi gave him some Lidocaine. Will started crying really hard because it hurt really bad. My heart still aches over it. We were given a prescription for an antibiotic to help ward off infection and told to watch for signs of possible infection. Will seems to be doing okay. He says it hurts occasionally so we are keeping it bandaged and covered in Neosporin.
Third, we have been trying to get our cabin listed with Fireside Chalet and Cabins to get some rental income. We have had a few set backs but hope to start renting it in the next few days. While we are working on this, we got the standard "Foreclosure" letter from a lawyer's office notifying us that foreclosure proceedings are pending if we don't start paying what we owe. Joy of joys (hear the sarcasm dripping from my keyboard...) We also got a letter from the new Property Owners' Association saying we owe our home owners dues for the last four months and for four months of cable, since we did not have a rental company taking them out for us. Fun, fun, fun..... (sarcasm again).
Can we go to bed, wake up the next morning and everything be right again? It sure would be nice. On a positive note, the Redemption revival was AWESOME!!! The Spirit of God moved in a remarkable way this past weekend. Lives were touched and changed. Saturday morning, we prayed "pockets of prayer" about the city and surrounding area; community leaders; against poverty, drugs, violence, apathy, racism, and any other "isms" that are here; we prayed for God to move in a mighty and miraculous way; to move mountains that stood in our way; and that Memphis would not be known for her past kings (cotton, BB, Elvis, and Dr. Martin Luther, Jr.) but for the King of Kings. Priscilla gave awesome messages and the music was uplifting and powerful. Her brother, Anthony Evans sang with some of his friends. Beverly Crawford also sang and danced. It was an awesome event.

Old Friends Found
I am soooo excited!!! A friend I haven't seen or heard from since 10th grade found me today on Facebook!!! Kim and her family moved to Amory, MS while we were growing up and we lost touch. She found a couple of us from high school on Facebook and now we are talking again!!! She has four boys, two daughter-in-laws and two grandkids. It is awesome!!
My friend Susan from church knows a guy I went to high school with and works with his wife. Susan was looking through Blake's friends' list and saw my name. A friend from MOPS, Tracy, graduated from high school with a friend I grew up with named Donna. It's been amazing how many people I know from one place knows people I know from a complete different place. What a small world we live in.

Celebrating One Year of Blogging!!
Can you believe it has been a year since I first started blogging?! So much has happened. I love to look back through the posts to see the pictures of the kids and all the different things that have gone on in our lives. I hope you have enjoyed reading about our adventures in life and will continue on with us.
Today, Hannah has her "Valentines for Veterans" program at school. The Kindergartners are having "Grandparents Day" also. Mom is picking the kids up after they are finished and is taking them out to lunch. I'll post more about it when I get a chance. It's time to get ready to go!!!

Catching Up
I've fallen behind on acknowledging birthdays and posting our "going ons." Things have been really busy, as usual in the Jinnette household. We have two birthdays today that I need to mention. They are my Aunt Sandy and my friend Wanda's daughter Sienna. Sunday was Christopher Daniel's first birthday. He is Sienna's little brother. Happy birthday everyone!!! You are always in our thoughts and prayers.
The temperatures around here have been really warm, at least for February. The high has been in the mid to high 60s. The weather has great: a few clouds but mostly sunshine. The storm system that hit Oklahoma moved through here Wednesday. We got a little rain and a lot of wind; the gusts were as high as 59 mph in some places. There were tree limbs everywhere. When I left the church after bible study, I had to drive around limbs in the middle of Reynolds Road and some on Center Hill. Some areas in Memphis lost power due to downed power lines because of trees and limbs being blown around.
Today was the end of an era: Hannah flipped a card at school. (Hannah was the only student in her class that had not flipped a card since the start of school this year.) For those who are not familiar with the flipping of cards, it means she got into trouble. Mrs. Herring, the Student Teacher in Hannah's class, was going over the answers to a test. While she was talking, Hannah started flipping through her Science book. Because Hannah's attention was divided between the teacher and the book, she had to flip her card. She was soooo upset when I picked her up today. We discussed it and she understands that she needs to pay attention to the teacher when she is talking and that it could be distracting to the students around her when she is playing with her books.
Saturday night from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., the church is having "Kids' Night Out" to raise money for the family Guatemala Missions trip coming up this summer. All three groups will have dinner and drinks provided. Will and Andrew's groups will be doing crafts, playing, and having loads of fun. Hannah's group of girls will have a "Pamper Parlour" where they can have their nails painted and have some one put make-up on them. The girls part is advertised as being a sleep over without spending the night. Hannah was really excited when I told her what they were going to be doing. Mike and I are going to try to go to Carrabba's for dinner but we will have to see what the wait is like. We are looking forward to having a date night!!
